Networking Device - Router
■ Summary - In today's blog we will discuss about an important networking device that is Router.
■ Router -
▪ Router is an intelligence device which connect two or more network segments which may be near or very far.
▪ Router is an intelligence device which connect two or more network segments which may be near or very far.
▪ A router is a physical or virtual appliance that passes information between two or more computer networks. Router is a specialized computer which specially design for routing task. Router is an internetworking device because router connect two or more computer networks together.
▪ Router transfer data packet from one place to another with the help of routing protocols.
▪ World wide network connectivity is made with the help of router. We can talk anywhere in the world, only because of the router, because the router is interlinked and with his help, our message goes to another person. so in the simple way we can say The router connects two or more computer networks and provides communication between them.
▪ The router has an operating system with the help of which data is sent from one place to another.
▪ If we want, we can also make the computer work like a router, which we call a software router If we compare the software router with the hardware router then it works very slow because hardware routers are specially designed for routing tasks.
▪ To perform the task of routing, router use a routing table that contains information of other networks. With the help of routing table, the router gets information about networks.
▪ The router uses the IP address for its working and sends data in packet form and router keep ip addresses information in routing table.
▪ Router is a Layer 3 (Network Layer) device of OSI model. The network layer performs the task of internetworking and the device which performs the internetworking task is called a router that region router is also called Layer 3 device.
▪ Router restricts broadcast from one network to another. Example if we have two networks and network 1 do broadcast so Router restricts that broadcast to going network 2. Each port of the router have a single broadcast domain.
▪ Router we can use in LAN or WAN. Router has LAN Ports which are used to connect to your LAN ans WAN ports used to connect to phone line, advanced telephone connection like ISDN, ADSL or Modem.
▪ Normally router is a WAN device but we can use it in WAN network as well as in LAN network.
▪ Router performs packet filtering that means router first identify the packet and then forward packet to destination address. If an unknown packet comes to the router, the router drops it.
▪ Router has two types interface Serial and FastEthernet. Serial interface use for connecting two router with each other and FastEthernet Inerface is used for connecting switch or hub (Local Area Network).
■ Functions of Router -
▪ Router connects different types of networks.
▪ Router shares Routing table information with other routers in the network and with the help of routing table router find the best path from source to destination.
▪ Router through the best path transfer data to the destination node.
▪ Router uses Routing Protocol to route data across a network like eigrp, ospf, rip etc.
▪ Router Operates slowly than switches and provide speed 10 Mbps in wireless network to 100 Mbps in wired network.
▪ Some popular router companies are Cisco, Juniper, 3 Com, HP, Nortel etc.
▪ Router has 2/4/8 ports.
▪ Router more expensive than switches, hubs.
■ Types Of Router
▪ Wired Router
▪ Wireless Router
▪ Virtual Router
▪ Core Router
▪ Edge Router
