What is NIC Card (Network Interface Card) || Networking Chapter III Part I ||

Networking Devices -  Network Interface Card

#Summary - In today's blog we will discuss about a networking device that is NIC Card

#NIC (Network Interface Card) - In a Network,  each node should have its own address to send and receive data. This address is known as MAC (Media Access Control) Address. This address is provide by a device known as NIC and it operates at layer2 (datalink) of OSI Model.NIC is fitted into the expansion slot inside the computer used to connect a node onto network.

It can support data transfer rate of 10, 100 or 1000 Mbit/s. You can select an NIC depending on the type of Network, Protocol and Media.

                                                        Wired NIC Card

The speed and performance of the network depends on the NIC. Every node on the network should have a network card with a MAC address and this MAC Address provided by IEEE.
This MAC Address is stored on the Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM).

#Types of NIC -

* Wired NIC -  To  connect a wired Ethernet card we required Ethernet Cable. Fibre -Optic NIC and 1000 BaseT NIC types of Wired NIC card.

* Wireless NIC - Wireless Ethernet Cards have a small antenna which uses radio waves to communication with the central wireless HUB or Switch known as Access Point.
